Back in the Kunin Felt Classroom with our Eco-fi® Prestofelt™, very popular for kid’s crafting. It comes in 9” by 12” craft cuts with an adhesive back eliminating the need for glue. It cuts easily and the backing peels off. I am very lucky to have ten grandlittles so we use a lot of Eco-fi® Prestofelt™!
Since it is summer vacation for the grandlittles and with the 4th coming up, we made this festive hanging red, white and blue garland. The Prestofelt™ backing is easy to draw patterns on and cut out but it also die cuts easily. Perfect for the kids as you can cut a lot of shapes and they can cut, stick and create.
These string garlands are all over the place for holiday décor. Usually they are sewn together in a continuous string on the machine. Wanting to involve several children in the project using the Prestofelt™ and craft floss created the same effect.
We used the Sizzix circle and star dies with a Big Shot. The grandlittles are pros with the Big Shot and cutting all of the circles is part of the fun for them. I am happy to let them.
- 9” x 12” craft cuts Kunin Eco-fi® Prestofelt™; 3 Red, 3 White, 3 Royal Blue
(Each piece will cut 10 circles or stars)
- 4-5 yds. Craft floss
- Circle and Star Dies, Big Shot and plates by Sizzix (www.sizzix.com)
- Scissors, ruler
1.) Cut each felt piece into half. The pieces will be the exact width of the dies. Excess on bottom of piece can be run through again to make a couple more circles or stars. Make a Sizzix sandwich. Place plate on bottom, felt piece, die cutting side, top plate. Run through Big Shot and reverse back through before removing. Repeat for as many circles and stars as required.
2.) Cut lengths of floss. Decide on a pattern or not. Pair up circles in same size and color or mix them up. Place circle paper side up, peel paper back half way and lay end of floss along center line. Press gently. Leave an end of 2-3”. Peel and stick the second circle over top of the first.
3.) Leave a space 1-2” between circles. Repeat Step 2 to the end adding a star last. Repeat for as many strands as desired.
TIP: If residue strands stick in die blade use tweezers or a stylus to remove. Use a lint brush for any fibers left on front of die surface.
Some other ideas for the kids to try:
- Use extra stars and circles to stick on table cloth or placemats. Give the kids a piece of felt to decorate as their own placemat.
- Paper cups, mini felt boards or canvas, the felt will stick to many surfaces but can also be peeled back off smooth finishes. Polka dot sneakers anyone?!
